Well, you might or might not be saying it wrong. We had the pleasure of flipping through You’re Saying It Wrong: A Pronunciation Guide to the 150 Most Commonly Mispronounced Words–and Their Tangled Histories of Misuse by Ross and Kathryn Petras on a recent flight and to our relief, we learned we were accurate on the pronunciation and meaning of about 90% of the book’s contents.
This fact in no way depreciates the book itself, and, for those who didn’t spend their childhoods with their noses in books (or maybe for those who did and really do know the meaning but not the pronunciation of words like “chiaroscuro”) it’s still amusing to flip through. Upon completion, you’ll certainly feel more erudite. There are also handy guides tucked amidst the definitions on how to pronounce various artists, authors, fashion designers, etc – all good to know.
