Sure, everyone will recognize Frida Kahlo on the cover of Rad Women Worldwide: Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History, but this book spans about 25 centuries and 30+ countries of women who are rad. There are familiar names, like Frida, and Malala, and many others; and it covers not just women who made political statements, but also athletes, artists and even a pirate. (Arrrr!) Kate Schatz’s storytelling and Miriam Klein Stahl’s art (the illustrations are papercut, dramatically rendered with paper, pencil and x-acto knife) do an excellent job of relaying these women’s tales and making them compelling while not overly sensationalized. A fun read overall, and would be a particularly good gift for a spirited teen girl on your holiday list.
