Think back, and picture the ’80s and ’90s visions for virtual reality headsets – there was a lot of metal and plastic involved. They looked futuristic, sure, but also elaborate and pricey. It’s a sharp contrast from what we’re seeing nowadays – sophisticated technology in a small, inexpensive cardboard package.
PSFK took a look at Google Cardboard, which has a cost of about $2.40. A few cardboard accessories, like a cardboard gun for playing games, are sold separately.
The accessibility of that price point is mind-boggling. Many still aren’t sure VR will catch on – but if it doesn’t, it sounds like we won’t have a high cost of adoption to blame.
